What to do this winter in Eeyou Istchee Baie-James

Winter at its best!

The winter season is long in Eeyou Istchee Baie-James, but we know how to take advantage of it! The cold, heavy snow and shorter days are all good reasons to get out and play outside. Not convinced? Here are some ideas on how to enjoy it!

Snowshoeing and Winter walking

This is a huge playground for all snowshoeing and winter walking enthusiasts! The ascent of mont Laurier is easier with snowshoes and promises magnificent views. The trees shrink during the climb and, when they are loaded with snow, they have nothing to envy to the Vallée des Fantômes!

Dress warmly, because once you reach the top, you will be exposed to the strong winter winds. But the panorama is well worth it!

Located at a short walk from downtown, take the trails along the Bell River. You'll come across beautiful cascades and the observation tower will give you a view of the city.

Pssst: The tower is a great place to watch the sunset!

PARC OBALSKI and other trails

In Chibougamau, you will certainly find a trail to take on snowshoes or on foot! The park offers many opportunities to hike in the forest and enjoy the winter.

Two relays (with wood stove: what a great place for dinners with friends!) are available on the trail around lac Gilman to warm up and take a well-deserved break.

On snowshoes, you can explore every corner of the park, off the beaten path. You can choose one of the many marked trails and spend hours playing outside!

Consult the Chibougamau's trails map to discover a host of other snowshoeing trails.

CHAPAIS municipal trails

The Escarpement rocheux trail has been specially designed to take snowshoe enthusiasts to the top of mont Springer! You will have a completely open view of Chapais, Oujé-Bougoumou and the Barrette Chapais sawmill.

The more athletic can also take the mont Springer trail, although the difference in elevation here requires more effort!

For a family outing, take the lac Campbell trail. Interpretation panels and a hebertism trail will make the excursion even more enjoyable!

Cross-country Skiing

Ski the 9 kilometers of trails around lac Gilman. The trail is groomed for classic and skate skiing. If you feel up for it, follow the long trail for about 20 km through the forest.

Equipment rental at the Centre plein air du Mont-Chalco.

Choose one of the trails, either classic or skating, to ski between the trees. The peace and quiet, the beauty of the landscape and the warmth of the fireplace at the chalet make cross-country ski outings a guaranteed success!

Alpine Skiing

Mount Chalco does not claim to be one of the biggest mountains to ski or snowboard down. But the pleasure is still assured on one or the other of the slopes.

The most adventurous will find their reward in the glades.

While you are at it, take advantage of this opportunity to go tubing! Here too, laughter is guaranteed!

It is not a secret: Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is a snowmobile paradise with over 1,000 kilometers of trails. Here, we boast the longest snowmobiling season. In addition, our trails are wide and well maintained.

Travelling through the boreal forest in Eeyou Istchee Baie-James is hours of fun and breathtaking snowy landscapes.

Some hotels even offer snowmobile packages. You can easily plan your snowmobile trip in Eeyou Istchee Baie-James!

Starry skies

The shorter period of sunshine in winter has one advantage: the stars! In the evening, it is easy to observe the Milky Way by taking a night walk along the many marked trails in the region. Look up and see why the reputation of the northern skies is well established! If you are lucky, you may find yourself under the Northern Lights.

After beautiful days spent outside, what could be better than to relax and be pampered?

Let yourself be spoiled with this new care concept! From an infrared sauna to light therapy goggles and a dry floatation bed, TechDétente offers you a range of solutions for relaxation, rest and rejuvenation.

It is no wonder she is called the lac Caché Fairy! Not only is Hélène an enthusiastic and welcoming host, but she is also a certified massage therapist with the Fédération des Massothérapeutes du Québec. Her kindness and her great talent make her massages a relaxing experience out of the ordinary.

Our favorite: the hot stone message, ideal for cold winter days!
